First Visit To The ER

Logan had his first emergency room trip and x-rays last night. I have been told it comes with the territory of being a parent, but it isn't really something you can prepare for... hence the emergency part of it I guess. Thankfully, he is doing fine and we were out of there in only a few hours.

He woke up about an hour after we put him to bed last night. He screamed a terrified, awful scream that we hadn't heard before. Dan was beside his bed in seconds and I came up behind him. His whole body was shaking like crazy. He wouldn't make eye contact with us and his eyes were twitching. We were hugging him, asking him questions to see if he was aware, singing Jesus Loves Me (a usual bedtime song for us) to calm him down. Finally after a few minutes of asking him questions, Dan asked if he knew who he was. He managed to get "Daddy" out while still screaming and shaking.

We tried to see if he could stand, but he couldn't really stand or walk without help. We took his temperature and tried getting him to sit and have some water. He continued with full body tremors and was screaming that his belly hurt. After about ten minutes of not being able to calm him, we headed to the emergency room. Better safe that sorry.

His piggy bank had fallen and broke earlier so there was loose money in the upstairs hallway. We worried he may have swallowed some and had a blockage, because he does put nearly everything in his mouth (but has never tried to swallow anything that isn't food). During the ride in he wanted me to hold his hand the whole way. He did calm down in the car but was still having tremors and complaining of stomach pains.

At that point we were wondering if it could have been a night terror. We have dealt with bad dreams, but nothing close to that. Since he was still whimpering that his belly hurt, we knew we had to at least make sure he was okay. They were very quick when we got there and the doctor was good with him. He wanted to do an x-ray to be sure that there was nothing in there that shouldn't be. Dan went with Logan to do the x-ray. He was not happy about having to lay by himself on the table, but was amused by the "big camera" taking pictures of him.

The doctor said there was no blockage as far as foreign objects go. Logan did have some constipation which he said can cause some awful intestinal pain at random. We headed back home around 12:30 with a back to normal little guy. We still aren't really sure what caused the whole thing.

We are taking the day today to rest, cuddle, and read books. Hopefully we will be able to catch up on some sleep too. We are happy that he seems back to normal, and are thanking God for a healthy little guy. Let me know if you have any experience with something like this because I am still curious what it was and what really caused it. I would be interested to hear from anyone that has experience with night terrors and how to handle them (in case that is what this was and it happens again).

  1. Oh my, poor little guy! I'm so sorry, that sounds terribly frightening. It's the worst when you have no idea what's wrong or what to do. So glad it's over and he's feeling better. snuggle up and enjoy the day, and maybe get a good cup of coffee and maybe a nap for yourself:)

  2. Thanks not knowing how to help is definitely one of the hardest parts of being a mom. We did do lots of cuddling and coffee! :)
