Bean Bag Colors

I am learning one thing quickly about little boys. They never. run. out. of. energy. Logan even sleeps with his eyes cracked open in case something exciting happens. I have learned that sometimes the best way to get him to eat something healthy is to let him eat on the go. He usually plays for a minute and then runs back to me for a bite. That's how those sweet-wish-they-would-last-forever kind of hugs happen too. He gives me a big squishy hug and then he is on his way again.

I have been thinking about how to incorporate learning his colors into play. I know he still has some time before he needs to know his colors and shapes, but I figure it can't hurt to introduce them. Like most things, he will catch on when he is ready. He doesn't have much of an attention span when it comes to sitting still. He can make it through about half of a book, and I think that is relatively normal at this age. So I decided that he needed to be able to be standing, or running, or jumping, or throwing (all of the normal little boy stuff).

I thought that bean bags in bright colors would be the perfect toy for him. He can throw them, sort them, kick them, run with them, knock things over with them. Perfect. So I headed to the store and spent a couple dollars to make some plain colored bean bags. I only made four different main colors for now. I figured when he gets these ones down maybe we can add more. He has already said all four colors but I am not convinced that he knows which is which yet. Anyway, he had a blast throwing them and that is what is most important right now.

The supplies that I used.

I cut a couple of inches off of each felt piece to make a 6" square.
I used my sewing machine to sew around each edge.
It would be pretty easy to do by hand but I was just trying to get them done quickly.

I pulled the rest of the square through the opening that I had left so that the seam was on the inside of the bag.
I ended up needing to use a larger funnel than I had in the original picture because the beans
wouldn't fit through the smaller one. If you only have a smaller funnel you could use rice as a filler instead.

Once they were stuffed I sewed the last 2" strip by hand on each one.
Here is the finished product!

When we played with them today we just said each color as we threw them. I think that in time if we continue doing that he will learn each of the colors. They ended up being a cheap toy that he has already had a lot of fun with. I didn't think about pictures but I did get a quick video.
