The Memory Of A Goldfish

The other day Logan and I were on a little walk outside. I know that so much of what he learns is through observation right now. I think that there is so much for toddlers to learn and explore outside and the bonus is he absolutely loves it. So some days we just go out and walk, and talk, he points, I label things, and so on. I am so thankful for this special time with him. Time to watch him discover the world.

We had walked by a neighbor's townhouse. I had never met this neighbor before. When we walked by I smiled and said "Hello". Logan waved and smiled too... and then just like that, he was headed off in a different direction. The man looked at me and said, "Toddlers... they have the memory of a Goldfish." I smiled and said something like, "He is a very busy little guy".
When I caught up to Logan I started thinking a little more about this conversation. The first thing I thought is this guy must not have kids. It seems like Logan does go a in a million directions over just a couple of minutes, but the memory of a Goldfish? ...Definitely not. The memory of an (almost) two year old is remarkable.
His attention span isn't very long, but toddlers and children in general have amazing memories. They can remember way more than we ever think possible. It is like they are little sponges that soak everything up and never let it go. So yes, he does run around from one thing to the next, but he never stops amazing me with the things that he remembers. I am pretty sure that as far as his memory goes, he is a lot better off than I am.

So not only am I fine with him being all over the place outside, I am grateful for it. It is such an important time for him to be learning and observing the world. The short attention span doesn't bother me at all. Maybe that is all of the time they need soak something in... and then they are off to discover something new!
