Desk Makeover

In this post from a couple weeks ago I mentioned that I had a D.I.Y. project that I would be posting soon. We have a big desk that we use for the computer and business stuff right now.  It sits under the large window on the back wall of the dining room, and seems to overshadow the window (especially when piled high with papers). It feels even more bulky the fifth time you walk by it and stub your toe in one day. So we decided to be on the lookout for a smaller desk that would fit nicely under the window in the dining room and not take up as much room.

I went yard saling a few weeks ago and found the perfect little desk. It was pretty ugly at the time but I knew with a little help it could be a cute upgrade to the dining room. So ten dollars later I was headed home with this gem old thing.

So I did some sanding.

and some priming.

Then I used two coats of Benjamin Moore semi gloss white paint. I also decided to add a little red (spoiler alert- the same color we used on the dining room walls) for some fun detail. It can always be painted white again if I get sick of it but I love it right now. I picked up some new hardware at Lowes. I also picked up some place mats that went perfectly with our color scheme in the dining room. I got the idea to put plexi glass over the desk here. This allows the writing surface to be smooth and firm, keeps the paint protected, and allows me to change up the fabric whenever I want. Lowes will cut the plexi glass to the right size right in the store so that kept it simple on my end. So after a little work and a few small updates...

Just like that, our larger desk takes a trip to the basement. It feels good to be free of the danger of stubbed toes. The updated look adds to the "dining room" feel a bit too. The before and after pictures of the dining room are still on their way. Dan got rained out of a job today and came home to do the finishing touches. Hope to have those pictures up very soon!

Progress feels good!
